John Common sometimes wishes he were a filmmaker or a painter, but due to a run-in with his brother's record collection at an impressionable age, he ended up with a bad case of the rock and an obsession for making music instead. He's constantly writing songs... they range from raucous and snarly, to beautiful and introspective. He grew up in Pensacola, Florida -- hotbed for every strain of rabidly fundamentalist, evangelical Christian sect known to man (action) and a surprisingly vibrant indie music scene (reaction). When he was thirteen, he found his older brother's Epiphone acoustic guitar covered in dust in the back of a closet and a light bulb went on. "Writing songs, recording and playing music helps me make sense of things… it’s a habit that won’t go away,"" he says.

Itchy-O's Scott Banning speaks at Abecedarian October 28th

Scott Banning currently works in the Denver County Intensive Care Unit as an EMT, at least that’s his day job, by night, with his crew of collaborators he creates audio/visual work under the name Itchy-O. Combining Guitar, Accordion and samples of a wide variety of sounds ranging from the mundane to the highly unusual with handcrafted, distorted and distressed films, Itchy-O creates work that evokes both the mysterious and the ridiculous.

Banning’s musical career includes working with Crash Worship, Super Collider and Alpha Jerk among many others. He’s worked in the LA Movie world and the San Francisco Art world at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and was the proprietor of San Francisco music venue The Ptomaine Temple.

Itchy-O has participated in numerous film festivals including The International Experimental Cinema Exposition (TIE) in Montreal and The Lausanne Underground Film and Music Festival in Lausanne Switzerland. They have several albums out including Pulmonic and Tosspot/Linchpin

Action Figures: The Return of Self Made!!!

Well it's been over a year since the last Self Made and I think I may be rested up and ready to roll again.

There will be some changes though, the first being the name, I struggled with that one but I think I came up with something that I like even better ACTION FIGURES, I think we'll keep the tag line "making the things we want to exist" which is part of a Miranda July quote. I just love that woman and she is definitely full of action.

Were changing to a monthly schedule, I loved having the event every Tuesday and there were plenty of creative folks in town to run the event even twice a week but it was hard on my schedule, it was a lot of work.

There is a location change too, there were too many obstacles to the last location (parking and noise to name two of them), so the first one will be at the studio of Anthony Camera, yes that is his real name, and of course he is a photographer, a fantastic photographer at that. His bio and images will follow.

After Anthony we have plans for a permanent location that I think you will all be thrilled with.

Oh and we have plans for a variety of Action Figure paraphernalia coming up so don't do your christmas shopping yet.
